Some days you need a little extra help to feel inspired or motivated, you may find that a couple of hours escape with a feel good book or film could help.
This week we are bringing you a collection of books, films and people that we hope can add some positivity to your day.
There will be very few people reading this, who will know who this lady is. However, you might be a raving fan once you watch her videos. Mel Robbins is a best selling author and speaker from the USA. She has a book currently out called: The 5-second Rule and if you enjoy the videos you may want to read the book. Her YouTube channel has videos with titles such as: ‘If you struggle with anxiety, this mind trick will change your life’ and ‘Stop caring what other people think’.
She speaks with honesty about her personal experience of anxiety but also uses research and science to explain why we have anxiety and fear and how to change our thinking patterns.

A box office hit, this film (which is now 18 years old) won Julia Roberts an Oscar for her performance. The storyline is: an unemployed single mother becomes a legal assistant and almost single-handedly brings down a California power company accused of polluting a city's water supply. It is inspiring because it is based on a true story. How one woman makes a big difference and refuses to be silenced in her crusade for justice.
This book is a documentation of the author’s yearlong attempt to discover how to improve parts of her life and to bring more happiness to her day. There are lots of practical steps and advice you can take from this book as well as learning from her failures. This is a good book if you want to shake things up in your life or see life from a different perspective.
Do you ever wish you could read hundreds of self-improvement books but you can’t find the time? Have you thought about watching a short video for free rather than watching the dust form on the pile of books on your bedside table? The YouTube channel Fight Mediocrity turns all the key points of a well-known book into an animated video. I find they are easy to follow and a memorable way to learn from a great selection of authors.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence plays Joy Mangano, a self-made millionaire who created her own business empire. It’s a film about the struggles Joy faces as she tries to convince herself, her family and potential customers that she can succeed with her great product. It is definitely a film about perseverance.
Are you a Grey’s Anatomy fan? Or Scandal? The creator of many successful TV series in the USA has written a couple of books and this one is a bestseller. Shonda describes how she learned to tackle self-doubt and started saying yes, instead of letting fear win by saying no. It’s honest, real and funny.

With all the talk in the media recently about equal pay in the BBC and other organisations, it seems relevant to watch a film on the subejct. If you don’t know the story it's about 187 female machinists, from Ford’s factory in Essex, who fought and went on strike in 1968 to be paid equally. The strike resulted in the Equal Pay Act 1970.
The film is witty, entertaining and inspiring with a great cast. You can watch the trailer here.
You might be thinking ‘why have you included A-list movie star Will Smith on this list?’
Will Smith has recently started his own YouTube channel where he posts videos about his life and the places he visits (there are a lot). But the best thing is the inspirational messages in his videos to motivate and encourage his audience.
If you are a fan, I think you will enjoy seeing this other side to the celebrity.

Mindfulness is something we regularly talk about at West Cumbria Carers because many of us have experienced the benefits first hand. Learning techniques which help us to lower anxiety, stress and even sleep better. We run 8 week courses throughout the year with the next one starting in June at our Cockermouth office (click here for more information).
If you can’t make it to our sessions, or would just prefer to try Mindfulness at home, you can 'read all about it'! This book has been recommended at our sessions in the past and has very positive reviews online. It comes as a paperback with guided meditations exercises or as an audiobook (do not listen whilst driving). The book explains Mindfulness very well; it is easy to follow and has simple yet powerful practices to incorporate into your life.
