19th May 2017Category: Working Carers
Carers Week is a big deal in our office!! It is an annual national awareness campaign to celebrate and recognise the vital contribution made by unpaid carers. At West Cumbria Carers we are always spreading the word but the week of 12-18th June provides a great platform to talk about carers. Every year there is a theme and this year’s is; “Building Carer Friendly Communities”. So we have a few events planned for that week which will hopefully build awareness, get new people interested in our charity plus raise some money.
The Cupcakes are back!
Over the last couple of years Carers Week and cupcakes have been a great success. This will be my first time to experience the excitement of #Cupcakes4Carers and I am sure I will probably eat my fair share of them in the name of charity. We have a couple of cupcake events so hopefully you can pop down and meet some of the team:
• Wednesday 14th June 2017, 10am - 1pm at West Cumbria Carers, Suite 7F Lakeland Business Park, Cockermouth
• Thursday 15th June 2017, 10am – 1pm at The Cornerstone Bookshop, Church Street, Whitehaven
The events are open to everyone so grab a work buddy, a friend or relative and have a cuppa, cake and chat.
I do like to bake so I think I will be creating a few mini masterpieces to raise money (plus I will obviously need to eat a couple for quality control). If you are interested in making cupcakes to raise money for the charity please contact Michelle McGibbon on 01900 821976
Tweet me! Twitter fans!
If you are a Twitter fan and you like to tweet, you might be interested in something I am doing on the Monday12th June. I am going to be hosting #cumbriahour at 7pm.
It is basically a big group conversation in the world of twitter for an hour and different people discuss and chat about the topic using the hashtag Cumbria hour. I will be asking the question; “Why is it important to support carers in the workplace?”
I want to get business leaders, employees from different industries and working carers to lift the lid on this topic and hopefully get people thinking about how they can support working carers. If you want to get involved the only two things you need are a twitter account and an opinion. I hope you can join me on the night but if you can’t please message me at: HannahBlake@westcumbriacarers.co.uk with suggestions and I can share them in the conversation.
You can follow the conversation at
Cumbria Carers Conference 2017
On Monday 12th June between 10am-3pm at Daffodil Hotel, Grasmere there will be a gathering of carers from all parts of the county. This is the second year of the conference. It will be hosted by Carers Support Cumbria a
consortium made up of Cumbria’s five Carers Organisations –West Cumbria, Carlisle, Eden, South Lakeland and Furness. I know it is a work day so it might not be suitable for everyone but some of the activities and topics may be of interest to you.
This year’s conference is going to be all about you and your thoughts & feelings about being a carer.
In January carers were invited to take part in creative workshops with the Wordsworth Trust. The carers used their experiences and struggles then transformed them into beautiful pieces of reflective and creative works. The work produced will be shared at the conference. On the day, attendees will also be given an opportunity to try their hand at getting creative with taster workshops. There will also be taster sessions in Tai Chi and Yoga (this is still to be confirmed), the opportunity for consultation with carers on services provided locally both by Adult Social Care and the Carers Organisation they are registered with. Plus a chance to put forward ideas for the Cumbria Carers Strategy.
PLACES ARE LIMITED so if you are interested in attending please call the office as soon as possible. We will let you know nearer the time if you have a place and send you a full programme for the day. (There is also the bonus that transport will be provided).
If cupcakes are not your thing and you want to let your hair down for a night, why not come to our band night? It is on Friday 23rd June 7pm-11pm, at the Kirkgate Centre, Cockermouth. Price is £7 each and this includes a free bottle of Jugglers Ale (our charity drink). The band Collision will be performing giving you an opportunity to show off your best dance moves or just a head bob in the corner (whatever your style is or depending on how much you enjoy sipping the Jugglers Ale).
